As America\u2019s population continues to grow older, family members are increasingly stepping into demanding roles as caregivers \u2014 which often comes at considerable personal cost.<\/p>\n

\u0410 \u0418\u0441\u0441\u043b\u0435\u0434\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0446\u0435\u043d\u0442\u0440 \u041f\u044c\u044e<\/strong> survey of 8,750 U.S. adults found that one in 10 reports serving as a caregiver<\/a> for a parent 65 or older. Another 3\u202f% care for a spouse or partner in the same age group, while less than 1% report caring for both a parent and partner.<\/p>\n

Among adults who have a parent 65 or older, 24\u202f% said they are caregivers, with that share climbing to 31\u202f% when the parent is 75 or older.<\/p>\n

Similarly, 25\u202f% of adults with an aging spouse or partner report being a caregiver. This rises from 21\u202f% for spouses 65 to 74 to 32\u202f% for those 75 and older. And the costs of \u0443\u0445\u043e\u0434 \u043d\u0430 \u0434\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/a> continue to be a driver of reverse mortgage demand as seniors judge their ability to pay for it with \u043f\u0435\u043d\u0441\u0438\u043e\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u043d\u0430\u043a\u043e\u043f\u043b\u0435\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/a> \u0438\u043b\u0438 \u0421\u043e\u0446\u0438\u0430\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u043e\u0431\u0435\u0441\u043f\u0435\u0447\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Caregiver income, gender divide<\/h2>\n

Not all adults with relatives who are \u0441\u0442\u0430\u0440\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u043d\u0430 \u043c\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0435<\/a> are equally likely to be caregivers.<\/p>\n

Lower\u2011income adults \u2014 among those with a parent, spouse or partner age 65 or older \u2014 are far more likely than middle\u2011 and upper\u2011income adults to serve in caregiving roles.<\/p>\n

Thirty\u2011nine percent of lower\u2011income adults in this group report being caregivers, compared with 23% of middle\u2011income and 16\u202f% of upper\u2011income adults.<\/p>\n

Women<\/a> also are more likely than men to take on these responsibilities. Among adults with an aging parent, spouse or partner, 28\u202f% of women describe themselves as caregivers compared with 23% of men.<\/p>\n

Women who care for aging parents also report more negative effects than men.<\/p>\n

Among caregivers regularly helping a parent, 47\u202f% of women said caregiving has harmed their emotional well\u2011being versus 30\u202f% of men. In terms of physical health, 38% of female caregivers reported negative impacts compared with 26% of male caregivers.<\/p>\n

Men are more likely than women to say caregiving has had a positive effect on their emotional well\u2011being (36% vs. 21%).<\/p>\n

Daily support includes tasks of all sizes<\/h2>\n

Caregivers provide a wide range of assistance. Among those caring for an aging parent, 68\u202f% said they regularly help with at least one of the tasks included in the \u043e\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0441<\/a>.<\/p>\n

More than half of parental caregivers (52\u202f%) regularly help with errands, housework or home repairs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Forty-two percent assist with managing health care \u2014 including scheduling appointments or medication management \u2014 and 39% regularly help with finances such as budgeting or paying bills.<\/p>\n

Sixteen percent said they provide regular personal care like bathing or dressing, with another 15\u202f% helping sometimes.<\/p>\n

Among those caring for an aging spouse or partner, about two\u2011thirds (66%) regularly help with one or more daily tasks. Forty\u2011eight percent help manage health care or finances, 47% assist with errands or housework, and 19% provide personal care.<\/p>\n

Weight of caregiving<\/h2>\n

Many caregivers describe a deeper bond with the person they care for.<\/p>\n

Fifty-six percent of adults who regularly help a parent reported that caregiving has had a positive impact on their relationship, while just 16\u202f% said it\u2019s been negative.<\/p>\n

Forty\u2011four percent of those caring for a spouse or partner cited a net positive impact on that relationship and 20% reported a negative impact.<\/p>\n

But across other aspects of life, caregivers often report strain.<\/p>\n

Among adults who support an aging parent, more said caregiving has had a negative rather than positive impact on their emotional well\u2011being (39% vs. 28%); physical health (33% vs. 19%); financial situation (32% vs. 18%); job or career (30% vs. 17% among those employed) and social life (36% vs. 15%).<\/p>\n

For those aiding a spouse or partner, views are more mixed.<\/p>\n

Caregivers are nearly as likely to say caregiving helps as hurts their emotional well\u2011being \u2014 35\u202f% positive, 33\u202f% negative \u2014 and they report similar divisions on physical health, finances and social life<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Broader aging-in-place trends<\/h2>\n

\u041e\u0442\u0434\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043e\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0441<\/a> from Pew found that most adults 65 and older (93%) live in their own homes or apartments, while a small share (9%) receive care there.<\/p>\n

Small shares of respondents said they live in the home of an adult child (2%) or another family member (1%), live in an assisted living facility (1%) or have some other arrangement (3%).<\/p>\n

Most older adults prefer to age in place, with 60% saying they\u2019d like to stay in their home and receive care there. Smaller shares favor assisted living (18%) or moving in with family (11%).<\/p>\n

Upper-income adults are more likely to prefer assisted living (28%) than middle- (19%) or lower-income (13%) peers. Confidence in achieving these plans varies, with 37% of those wanting in-home care feeling it\u2019s very likely, 35% for assisted living and 58% for moving in with family.<\/p>\n
