\u00a0The phone rang on Sept. 8, 2022, and Britany Boatwright put the doctor on speakerphone, expecting routine news from a second biopsy. <\/p>\n

Instead, she heard words that would redefine everything; breast cancer.<\/p>\n

Sitting in her office with her director of operations planning a team meeting, Boatwright\u2019s first thought wasn\u2019t about her brokerage or her growing \u043d\u0435\u0434\u0432\u0438\u0436\u0438\u043c\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/a> business. It was about her 6-month-old son, Malcolm.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe needs me, he seeks my soul. I can\u2019t imagine living without my mom as a kid, you know,\u201d Boatwright recalled in a conversation with \u0416\u0438\u043b\u044c\u0435\u041f\u0440\u043e\u0432\u043e\u043b\u043e\u043a\u0430<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Just months earlier, she had launched a boutique brokerage with the grand opening weeks away. Her team was growing. Her vision was expanding. <\/p>\n

Today, Boatwright leads MaX House<\/strong>, brokered by \u042d\u043a\u0441\u043f \u041d\u0435\u0434\u0432\u0438\u0436\u0438\u043c\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/strong>, \u043a\u043e\u0442\u043e\u0440\u044b\u0439 \u0441\u043e\u043e\u0431\u0449\u0438\u043b<\/a> $103.32 million in 2025 volume across 264 transaction sides to RealTrends \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043d\u043e<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Those numbers were good enough for No. 4 in sales volume and No. 5 in transactions sides, ranking among mega teams in Tennessee. MaX House affiliated with \u043e\u043f\u044b\u0442<\/a> in June of last year.<\/p>\n

After studying psychology and education at the University of Tennessee (UT), Boatwright sensed that she was destined for an alternate career path.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just knew I was great at talking to people and caring, and I went to school initially to be a teacher and also I studied psychology,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve always loved to understand the inner workings of people, like, \u2018Why do you think you behave the way you do?\u2019 Very fascinating stuff. But then, when I graduated from UT, I quickly realized I did not want to be in the classroom setting.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also worked with AmeriCorps<\/strong> in inner-city schools before an internship at \u0421\u043e\u0432\u0445\u043e\u0437<\/strong> proved to be an initial step toward real estate.<\/p>\n

Boatwright became a top producer across auto, casualty, life and health insurance lines \u2014 buying her first home in early 2017.<\/p>\n

However, that transaction left her with a sense that something was lacking.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t feel like my agent did that much and was sure I could provide a much better experience to clients,\u201d Boatwright \u00a0said. \u201cSo, I just started to get my real estate license, and I got that June 19, 2017. My mom thought I was absolutely insane to quit a full-time job and have a mortgage and to say, \u2018Hey, I\u2019m going to be unemployed, we\u2019ll see how this goes.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The Boattright Group launched in June 2021 and by 2022, she had opened her own \u043a\u043e\u043c\u0430\u043d\u0434\u0430.<\/a><\/p>\n

Then came the diagnosis that forced her to confront whether she could \u2014 or should \u2014 continue growing her real estate presence.<\/p>\n

The staging appointment<\/h2>\n

Boatwright\u2019s mother had breast cancer and her aunt died from stage four breast cancer in the 1990s.<\/p>\n

Her family history prompted doctors to take her concerns seriously when her husband urged her to call the breast clinic after their son kicked her in the chest.<\/p>\n

The staging report delivered worse news than expected. The tumor measured 8 centimeters and had spread to a lymph node.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo me a favor and don\u2019t look up numbers based on that again,\u201d Boatwright recalled the doctor saying. \u201cMy husband leans towards science, and he\u2019s going to go look and see the data is, so he Googles and then he freaks out.\u201d<\/p>\n

At that point, Boatwright was ready to abandon her business plans.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want to open up a firm. I was about to have to fight for my life,\u201d she said. \u201cI was thinking, \u2018I can\u2019t do this all. I can\u2019t raise a son who just turned six months, fight for my life and have a brokerage. I just can\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

A coach\u2019s call changed everything<\/h2>\n

Boatwright\u2019s coach called unexpectedly that day \u2014 connecting her with a Florida team leader who had survived cancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to sacrifice one for the other, and at the end of this, you have a really great story, and you\u2019ll write a book one day,\u201d Boatwright said the coach told her.<\/p>\n

The advice was practical; identify top producers, formalize training systems and limit direct interactions with personnel.<\/p>\n

\u201c[The Florida team leader] and I talked that Saturday,\u201d Boatwright said. \u201cI still live by her advice to this day.\u00a0 It started with identifying people to replace my production because I was still a producing team leader, like most team leaders start out as.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, \u2018I have all new agents, I wasn\u2019t attracting producers at that point.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Boatwright followed through with the plan and her grand opening Sept. 19, 2022 \u2014 the same day she underwent full-body scans to determine if the cancer had spread.<\/p>\n

Only four people in the crowd knew she what she was dealing with.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that people thought that I was crying because I was first generation for everything, going to college, buying a home, having a business,\u201d Boatwright said. \u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of stuff in my background that I\u2019ve had to overcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chemo and clarity<\/h2>\n

Boatwright began chemotherapy shortly after he 2022 diagnosis.<\/p>\n

Her first four rounds are nicknamed \u201cthe Red Devil\u201d in the medical community \u2014 with particularly harsh side effects. The oncologist told her upfront the treatment only worked about 30% of the time for her hormone-positive cancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told them to throw the kitchen sink at it, because I have a whole lot of life ahead of me and I had a baby at home,\u201d Boatwright said.<\/p>\n

She had chemotherapy at least every other Thursday while maintaining a regular office schedule and keeping her diagnosis hidden from most colleagues. <\/p>\n

That was until Dec. 29, 2022, when she rang the bell signaling the end of treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of the real estate community did not know until I shared with them that December,\u201d said Boatwright. \u201cThey said, \u2018You showed up online. You showed up to trainings. You were at the Halloween party. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou were signing listings, your team was growing and you guys were breaking records. What do you mean you were just going through cancer treatment?’\u201d<\/p>\n

The good news<\/h2>\n

In January 2023, follow-up scans delivered an unexpected result.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot see any trace of cancer in your body,\u201d Boatwright said doctors told her. \u201cThat said the chemo did its job.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Feb. 9, 2023, Boatwright underwent a bilateral mastectomy. Surgeons couldn\u2019t find the cancer trail when they put dye in before surgery. Pathology reports confirmed it \u2014 no signs of cancer remained.<\/p>\n

\u201cI must have over 10,000 photos and videos of my son, because with his first year of life, I didn\u2019t remember a lot of it,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople will now ask me, \u2018How did you manage all that?\u2019 I\u2019m like, \u2018I had the most joyful thing to come home to; a smiling, freaking happy, fat baby.\u2019 He kept me grounded and pushing forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Boatwright later learned she is BRCA2 positive, increasing her risk for ovarian, liver, pancreatic and skin cancers \u2014 later having surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes.<\/p>\n

\u201cGoing into menopause as a 33-year-old woman, I\u2019m like, \u2018I don\u2019t know how I did all this stuff,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Advice for others<\/h2>\n

Boatwright is now more than six months off her two-year medication and continues taking a 10-year pill.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s also writing a book called \u201cThe Five-Year Fire\u201d \u2014 a reference to the five-year survival mark many cancer survivors chase.<\/p>\n

Today, Boatwright runs a $100 million team, watches her son grow and is thriving with agents who share her vision.<\/p>\n

While taking pride in her ability to fight through a life-threatening ordeal, she\u2019s thankful for support that stretched across her real estate and personal life.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe day I got diagnosed, I went to this networking group for women at a local church I\u2019ve never been to,\u201d she said. \u201cMy neighbor invited me. They\u2019re like, \u2018How can we pray for y\u2019all today?\u2019 I just met them that one time and they delivered dinner to my house every Thursday when I was going through chemo.<\/p>\n
