Why haven\u2019t mortgage rates dropped along with oil prices? Because Fed policy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.housingwire.com\/articles\/why-mortgage-rates-havent-followed-oil-prices-by-moving-lower\/\">has shifted<\/a>, and some Fed members want more rate hikes.<\/p>\n<p>Today, I will use Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack as an example, looking at her remarks on <strong>CNBC<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Here are some of Hammack\u2019s comments in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2026\/06\/30\/inflation-is-too-high-and-may-need-higher-rates-to-bring-it-to-target-cleveland-feds-beth-hammack.html\">CNBC interview<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cIf consumer data holds up, Fed policy may not be restrictive enough.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cInflation is still too high, Fed may need to consider rate hikes.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cJob market is right around full employment, growth looks good.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hammack doesn\u2019t place much weight on falling oil prices; in fact, she says they might lead to better spending and more inflation. <\/p>\n<p>And in her view, the AI story is inflationary, not disinflationary, due to the growth in data centers. She used the example of higher electricity costs, which has been a common negative theme due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/crs-product\/R48646\">massive energy <\/a>used by these data centers. Also, the AI boom is causing chip shortages and raising prices, as seen when Apple recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/lifestyle\/shopping\/apple-is-hiking-the-prices-of-macbooks-and-ipads-due-to-the-memory-chip-shortage\/ar-AA26wpLY?ocid=BingNewsSerp\">increased prices<\/a> on their products.<\/p>\n<p>Data centers are becoming a core factor in the Fed\u2019s more hawkish stance, and probably a big reason AI popularity has been declining lately.<\/p>\n<p>Hammack believes in her full-employment model, which means the current labor data is fine in her view. In fact, she was the least concerned Fed member last year when job growth hit 21st-century lows, so it\u2019s not shocking to hear her say we are at full employment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u0421\u0435\u0433\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044f\u0448\u043d\u0438\u0439 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/jolts.nr0.htm\">job openings report<\/a> gave her more ammo for rate hikes, because the job openings data is no longer declining, as it did toward the end of 2025. In fact, it\u2019s been rising in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/empsit.nr0.htm\"><strong>\u0411\u041b\u0421<\/strong> \u043e\u0442\u0447\u0435\u0442 \u043e \u0432\u0430\u043a\u0430\u043d\u0441\u0438\u044f\u0445<\/a> as well. A lot of people hate the job openings data, but the Fed loves it, and they make the rules, folks.<\/p>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/29546024\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\"><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>The Federal Reserve is big on jobless claims data, and it\u2019s still near historical lows, so Hammack has a lot of ammunition for rate hikes, given her belief that the labor market is strong. Since late 2022, I have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.housingwire.com\/articles\/the-last-domino-before-a-recession-job-losses\/\">\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0443\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043b<\/a> people not to talk about a recession until this data line breaks above 323,000. We are still under 250,000 here, with no noticeable uptrend for years now, so it\u2019s not shocking we haven\u2019t had a recession yet.<\/p>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/29546146\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\"><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>Hammack is just one person, like Kevin Warsh, but to me, she is the ringleader of the rate-hike movement at the Fed. Neil Kashkari of the Minneapolis Fed has said he wants just one rate hike in 2026, but I believe Hammack wants all the rate cuts from last year reversed, since she wasn\u2019t really into them.
