After months of deliberation, delays and drama, the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act has finally crossed the finish line.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The \u0437\u0430\u043a\u043e\u043d\u043e\u0434\u0430\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/a>, aimed at cutting red tape and making homeownership more attainable, is now the law of the land after President Donald Trump declined to sign or veto the bill before the deadline of midnight Eastern time Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u0412 \u041f\u0440\u0430\u0432\u0434\u0430 \u0421\u043e\u0446\u0438\u0430\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0430\u044f<\/strong> \u043f\u043e\u0447\u0442\u0430<\/a> on Friday morning, Trump said he withheld his signature<\/a> \u201cin protest\u201d of the \u0421\u0435\u043d\u0430\u0442<\/strong>\u2018s failure to pass the SAVE America Act, a separate bill targeting voter identification and registration.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The move threw a last-minute twist into what was a drama-filled final few weeks. Trump abruptly canceled<\/a> a planned signing ceremony for the bill on June 24, demanding \u041a\u043e\u043d\u0433\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0441<\/strong> prioritize the SAVE America Act, and later dismissed the housing bill as a \u201cbig yawn\u201d<\/a> by comparison.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The bipartisan package cleared the Senate 85-5 on June 22 and the \u043f\u0430\u043b\u0430\u0442\u0430 \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0432\u0438\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0435\u0439<\/strong> 358-32 on June 23. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) sent it back to the \u0431\u0435\u043b\u044b\u0439 \u0434\u043e\u043c<\/strong> on June 29. That started a 10-day clock, with Sundays excluded, for Trump to sign, veto or allow the legislation to become law without his signature \u2014 which is ultimately what happened.<\/p>\n

The dynamic is rare but not unprecedented. In 2016, then-President Barack Obama declined to sign a 10-year renewal of the Iran Sanctions Act, enabling the legislation to become law without taking action. That bill was also overwhelmingly bipartisan, having passed the Senate in a unanimous 99-0 vote.<\/p>\n

Recent polling from the \u0410\u043c\u0435\u0440\u0438\u043a\u0430\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0430\u043b\u044c\u044f\u043d\u0441 \u0441\u043e\u0431\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u0438\u043a\u043e\u0432 \u043d\u0435\u0434\u0432\u0438\u0436\u0438\u043c\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/strong> indicates that the general public overwhelmingly backs<\/a> the main objectives of the ROAD to Housing Act, with 89% of voters voicing their support.<\/p>\n
