Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like.

The latest and greatest in the terrific (and slightly terrifying) world of innovative food mashups comes a creation likely no one asked for: the spaghetti hot dog. Just what it sounds like. Chef and content creator Jo Shelkin (aka @thejoshelkin) posted the controversial recipe to his Instagram for his followers to enjoy—or actively despise.
Starting his tutorial off strong, Shelkin skewers a hot dog with uncooked spaghetti (yes, you read that right) and cooks them both in a pot of boiling water as you normally would. Once al dente, he lays out the noodles and tops them with marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese. Next, he rolls the dog over the dressed-up noodles and drops the entire concoction into sliced bread rolls.
It’s a bit hard to visualize—you may just want to watch the video.

Rather than using a hot dog bun, Shelkin opts for Hawaiian rolls. This is something we can definitely get behind—not only are the rolls more flavorful than regular buns, they also crisp up nicely while staying soft on the inside. Shelkin spreads garlic butter on both the inside and outside of the buns, adds the hot dog and spaghetti mashup, sprinkles it with parmesan, and bakes it.
If you’re interested in taste testing this concoction for yourself (or just fascinated by the recipe itself), here’s a full list of ingredients.
Spaghetti Hot Dog Ingredients
- 2 jumbo hot dogs
- 8-ounce spaghetti
- 1/2 cup marinara
- 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 grated parm
For the Ricotta Spread
- 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
- 1/4 cup ground pecorino romano
- 2 tbsp chopped parsley
For the Garlic Butter Rolls
- 1/2 cup melted garlic butter
- 1/4 cup ground parmesan cheese
- 2 tbsp chopped parsley for garnish
The Response to the Spaghetti Hot Dog
Don’t get us wrong, most of the recipe looks delicious. As for the spaghetti part, well… We’re not so sure. Neither were most of the commenters on Shelkin’s post.
“Straight to prison,” reads one top comment. “Where’s those Italian brothers who are really protective over Italian food,” asked another.
Even Barilla pasta’s official Instagram account joined in on the hype—though they didn’t seem too excited about the idea. “We feel violated,” the account posted.

Kings Hawaiian also commented on the post, but they showed support. “Making the sweet rolls into a garlic bread bun >>>” approved the company.
If there’s one thing social media users could agree on, it’s that they’d be more accepting of the recipe if Italian sausage replaced the hot dog. Not only did they think this combined with the spaghetti, marinara, and ricotta spread made more sense, but they also felt like making this gourmet hot dog with high-quality sausage could take it to a whole new level. If you ever dare to try this recipe yourself, it may be a worthwhile swap.
Only one hot take in the comments section seemed to receive unanimous support: “Not calling it ling-weenie is a fail.” We might just be inclined to agree.
