Storing supplies can be a challenge for even the most organized crafter. The excitement of getting started on a new project just doesn’t apply to the putting-away portion of the activity—and it’s easy to shove everything onto a shelf or in a closet and forget about it. When it comes to paint, taking the time to label each can with its color is a good start in keeping track of what you have, but you still need a place to put it all—and for painters, whether professional or hobbyists, using what you have is key to minimizing your expenses.
TikTok creator and professional DIYer Geneva Vanderzeil shared the clever way she organizes her paint supplies, and it ensures you’ll never have to guess the hue you’re getting into ever again. When she came across a beaten-up cabinet needing love and care, this upcycler knew exactly what to do with it. She filled in all the dings and holes, sanded it down, and painted it white for a fresh start.

Vanderzeil was in the habit of painting a large swatch of each can that she could refer back to, but as she said, “These swatches take up so much room, and I realized perhaps I could do that to the front of the cabinet.” She created a grid, which she then painted with large rectangles and labeled with their names.

Her video has been viewed over 83,400 times and liked by 8,600 people and counting. The comments mostly express enthusiasm, some aim to be helpful, and a few complained—this is TikTok, after all. “Omg, this is an artist’s dream! How cute!!” one viewer wrote.
“What about painting the edges of the shelves to match? That way, it’s easier to know where things go. I’m a visual person and would be flipping the doors to see the colors,” another suggested. “So true, good idea!” Vanderzeil agreed.

Despite how adorable the result was, someone had a little critique. “Heartbroken when you didn’t even out the edges of the swatches,” they lamented. The OP was polite but confident in her response. “I thought about it! But in the end, I experimented and loved the rustic life-like swatch look.”
If Vanderzeil decides to add more paint to her collection, she can always update the swatches with new colors, add more to the sides of the cabinet, or even paint new swatches on the inside of the doors. The simplicity of her design makes it as visually appealing as it is functional—the best outcome for a crafter who wants to reuse and recycle as much as she can.
