Picking a desk is no small decision. Gone are the days when your desk is just a spot to drop mail or put your laptop when you’re not using it: With many people working fully remote jobs or on a hybrid schedule, most of us are working from home at least one or two days a week, and our home desks are getting used more than ever.
With desks getting so much use, a basic surface or tiny console desk just isn’t enough anymore. You need room for a monitor, a spot for your coffee cup and water, cord organization so you’re not getting tangled in wires all day—the list can get long, especially if you require an ergonomic set-up or your job tasks take up multiple screens. Finding a desk that fulfills all these needs and doesn’t cost several hundred dollars and looks halfway decent is harder and more dispiriting than you’d think, a fact I learned firsthand this summer.

After moving into an apartment where I finally had space for my very own desk (a luxury I haven’t had in years!), I was excited to begin searching for the perfect desk. My enthusiasm quickly faded, though, when I realized that all the desks I liked the look of were out of my price range, and all the desks I could afford looked flimsy, like they wouldn’t survive another move. In the interest of both monetary efficiency and sustainability, I wanted a desk that would last, that was large enough for all my workday accessories, and that wouldn’t cost an exorbitant amount of money—and I finally found the intersection of all those things in the form of the Ezra Modular Desk with 6-Cube Storage from the Better Homes & Gardens collection at Walmart.

I feel truly lucky to have found this desk, which has already inspired my home officemate (aka my boyfriend) to look into getting a better-looking desk of his own.
So what makes this desk so great? First, let’s talk price: $140 isn’t nothing, but when many of the other desks I was looking at were $300 or more, $140 is truly a steal. That price even gets you more than just a work surface: The desk includes a cube storage unit with six shelves. Maybe best of all, the cube storage and desk aren’t attached, so you can arrange them together into the perfect L-shaped set-up for your space, or even set them apart and use the storage as a proper bookshelf. This flexibility is just another feature that makes the desk long-lasting. When you move or rearrange your space, you can rearrange the set-up, too, to use both pieces however you need to.

Speaking of long-lasting, I was very (very!) pleasantly surprised by the quality of the desk. The legs and frame are sturdy metal (though they’re colored to look like wood), and while the rest of the desk pieces are made of manufactured wood, not real wood, they’re thick and hardy—no part of this piece feels flimsy, shoddy, or like it might fall apart on the way to the moving truck. Truthfully, the desk feels so durable that I’m shocked by the price point.
Finally, the appearance. My desk is the Light Honey option, and it feels streamlined and subtle in my space. It’s serious (it’s a desk!) but not too formal; if you want something darker, a sophisticated Walnut color is also available. There’s a nice lip around the edge of the desk so I can’t just nudge things off it accidentally, and with the cube storage unit on its side, I have a ton of surface area for all my desk clutter. The cube storage basically triples the usefulness of the desk; with a few cube storage organizers, it’s become my all-purpose storage spot for books, office supplies, records, and everything else that doesn’t have an easy home somewhere else.
The Details
The desk arrived in a very large, very heavy flat box. (Getting it up to my apartment was probably the toughest part of the whole assembly process.) Once my boyfriend and I wrestled it inside, it was the matter of an hour or so to build the desk and storage unit; the instructions were clear and steps were simple, though a little time-consuming. You do need screwdrivers for assembly; they aren’t included in the box.
The Better Homes & Gardens Ezra Modular Desk with 6-Cube Storage is available from Walmart in two colors, Light Honey and Walnut.
