Everyone loves a bit of front door decor: a bright blue door standing out against an otherwise neutral home, a lovely display of potted plants leading up the steps to an entryway that welcomes visitors. That’s one of the parts of decorating for the holidays that’s just so fun—the wreaths and bows abound.

But recently, we’ve been reconsidering the bow on the front door not just for the holidays but year round. The bow has emerged as a stylish alternative to a traditional wreath, particularly as the coquette and bow aesthetic has gone so mainstream.

Traditionally, bows on a front door—much like wreaths—were seen as a holiday-centric design. But as the rise of year-round wreaths took hold, so did the rise of year-round front door bows. It has created such a beloved decorative moment that even Ruggable has made a bow mat for your front door to complete the look.

There are plenty of factors at play when it comes to this trend: Decorating a front door is fun but not everyone loves the rustic and natural vibe that traditional wreaths give off. Plus, bows offer a bit more versatility, because you can pick and choose the color and fabric you want, which allows you to customize it to your style and the season.

Hang a floral bow in the spring or a bow made of recycled Easter fabric during the Spring Equinox. Tie a burnt orange or mustard yellow bow around your door in the fall, and in the winter, consider a white or icy blue bow.  A velvet red bow might immediately give off a Christmas feel, but a yellow or pink bow in burlap, satin, or other recycled fabrics? Not quite so much. They also take little effort to incorporate and remove when you’re tired of them—and they aren’t too pricy either.

But let’s not forget the most likely culprit of the rise of front-door bows: the coquette aesthetic. The coquette look is often characterized by feminine, delicate, and whimsical energy, and one of the most pervasive motifs of the aesthetic is the bow. The aesthetic really took off on social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest, and it’s held its firm grasp on us ever since.
