IKEA’s New Furniture Line Includes Dressers That Put Safety at the Forefront

You don’t have to sacrifice safety for style.

When selecting a piece of furniture, the first thing you consider probably isn’t if it poses a safety risk (unless you’ve had an unfortunate personal experience). But dressers have long been a hazard for adults and children alike. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) even adopted a mandatory rule in August 2023 that enforces standards to prevent injuries and deaths caused by falling dressers: the Stop Tip-Overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth Act (STURDY).

Although previous safety standards were voluntary, the STURDY Act is changing how brands approach their designs through real-world testing. Unsurprisingly, IKEA is at the forefront: The company has always prioritized consumer safety and sustainability, and now it’s releasing a line of furniture designed to be un-tippable.

“At IKEA, we are always looking for ways to be innovative, while also keeping affordability, quality, and safety top of mind,” said Melissa Myers, Home Furnishings Business Leader for IKEA U.S., in a press release. “We are thrilled to introduce these new families with their timeless designs and innovative stability features. We hope our customers fall in love.”

The collection features two new dressers, GULLABERG and STORKLINTA. The former can be found in both dresser and nightstand sizing and is available in white and gray finishes, while the STORKLINTA is sleek and modern, and includes plenty of ways to customize the materials.

The STORKLINTA lineup also features a range of bedside tables, nightstands, and even wardrobe combinations—all of which are designed to prevent tipping. GULLABERG also includes wardrobe options in white and gray finishes, with two different matching nightstands to choose from.

IKEA STORKLINTA Series

Both dressers feature plenty of storage space and thoughtful details that seamlessly blend the furniture with the rest of your space. Plus, the new dressers feature a patented safety feature IKEA calls the “Anchor and Unlock” solution.

With “Anchor and Unlock,” the dressers can be anchored to a wall, which allows multiple drawers of the dresser to be opened together without posing any risk of tipping. This gives you leeway to store as much stuff as you’d like without worrying about the dresser toppling forward.

When the dressers aren’t anchored to anything, only one drawer can be opened at a time. This helps keep users—especially children—from accidentally adding too much weight to the front of the dresser and causing it to tip over.

You’ll find all the pieces in IKEA’s new collection available on ikea.com and in IKEA stores. To check whether a product is available near you, use IKEA’s online store locator.
