This Halloween, there’s a new trend taking over our fall mantels and window sills: Miniature Halloween villages. These spooky displays have quickly become the must-have decor item, captivating us with their charmingly eerie details. Combining creativity with a dash of nostalgia, Halloween villages—much like their classic Christmas counterparts—offer a fresh and versatile way to decorate for the season.
But what’s driving the craze behind these miniature frights? “When it comes to Halloween, there’s a plethora of spooky classics people love, including pumpkins, bats, and skeletons. However, some are now turning to new alternatives to bring this beloved occasion to life in their homes,” says Dayna Isom Johnson, Etsy’s trend expert. “One trend we’ve noticed gaining particular traction is Halloween Villages. Originally a long-standing Christmas classic, these villages have been given a haunted twist, adding a unique and festive touch to Halloween decor.”
From haunted houses and ghostly graveyards to tiny ghouls, goblins, and skeletons, we’ll dive into this frightfully fun Halloween trend and discover why everyone is decorating in miniature this year.

Why Are Halloween Villages So Popular This Year?
Christmas villages have been a popular holiday tradition for decades, with their roots tracing back to German putz displays and porcelain houses in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Fast forward to the 21st century, and they continue to captivate collectors and holiday enthusiasts around the globe, ranging from simple tabletop displays to elaborate, sprawling scenes that evoke a nostalgic winter wonderland. This enduring popularity is largely due to the meaningful traditions associated with them. For many families, assembling the Christmas village is a cherished annual ritual, creating lasting memories as new pieces are added each year.
Now, this popular holiday tradition is creeping into the Halloween season, with miniature haunted houses, witches’ cottages, and graveyards becoming highly sought-after decor. “These villages are great because they add a bit of whimsy to your home while also being sustainable,” Johnson says. They are collectible treasures that can be enjoyed year after year and passed down through generations.
House of Holiday, New York’s largest Christmas store, has experienced a remarkable surge in sales of Halloween villages in recent years. Janna Ovalle, who oversees online store operations and customer relations, points to several factors behind this growing trend in Halloween decor. “We’re seeing more people celebrating Halloween as a full season rather than just a single day,” she sayss. “This shift has led to more elaborate and immersive decorations, with Halloween villages becoming a centerpiece of these displays.”
Ovalle notes that collectors and holiday enthusiasts are increasingly drawn to unique, detailed pieces to expand their own miniature haunted towns, driving demand for new and creative designs. “Brands like Lemax have responded by expanding their Halloween village collections and releasing new, limited-edition pieces that quickly become must-haves for dedicated collectors and decorators,” she says.
In today’s digital age, social media platforms, like Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok, are also fueling this trend. “People love to share photos of their creatively arranged Halloween villages, inspiring others to start their own collections,” Ovalle says. “The sense of community and the drive to outdo previous displays each year further boost the growing interest and sales in Halloween villages.”

Build a Spooky Mantel Display
Transform your fireplace mantel into a chilling Halloween tableau by arranging your Halloween village pieces across it. Enhance the eerie atmosphere with cobwebs, lighting (like LED candles or string lights), and add moss for an extra spooky touch. “Add height to the display by using risers or stacked books under the buildings to create a dynamic, layered effect that draws the eye,” Ovalle suggests. “This setup turns the mantel into a focal point, highlighting the intricate details of each piece and setting a haunting tone for your living room.”

Place your Halloween village pride of place in the window sill where it can be admired by passersby. “During the day, natural light will highlight the details of your setup,” Ovalle says.
