When you meet with any interior design pro, they have a big task: trying to help make your home feel like you. To better understand their mission, they may look at your fashion choices, ask about recent travel highlights, or enquire about your favorite flowers. And if you’re making home design choices on your own, you can let those preferences guide you, too. But this begs the question: How can you take what you gravitate to in one area and bring it to life in your space?

What’s most often found in your glass and on your plate can also offer a glimpse into the designs that align, says Drucella (Dru) Perkins, CEO and co-owner of The Elle boutique hotel at Robinson Farms NxtGen in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and host of the YouTube show “Served Family Style.”

“As a fashion lover, I’ve always been more inclined to lead with fashion and pay attention to my clients’ personal style,” Perkins tells BHG. “But being in the hospitality industry for the past three years [with her hotel] has opened my eyes to the importance of food and drinks—I find that clients who are foodies are more open to new concepts and ideas.”

Those with adventurous palates could be more willing to experiment with a style on the edgy side, Perkins says, while those who prefer the classics may favor keeping things simple. The flavors, colors, and textures you gravitate toward in your food and drink choices can also hint to the palette or overall atmosphere you’re craving.

“Food and drink picks can definitely tell you about an individual’s personality and preferences, and I am a firm believer that your personality and preferences influence how you interact with spaces,” says Brandeis Short, co-founder and principal designer for Pillar and Peacock interior design in Florence, Alabama.

Remember when we predicted that culinarycore, aka using beloved dishes and drinks as the basis for a home design aesthetic, would be mainstream in 2023? Well, the cooking-inspired decor continues to serve up creative way to infuse more of yourself into your space.

With this in mind, we tapped Perkins and Short to help you pair your favorite fall drinks with buzzy design trends. Just like with food trends, there’s no need to feel married to these—each is easy enough to taste test for the season to see if it’s worthy of being added to your home design menu long term.

The Fall Decor Trend to Try Based on Your Go-to Fall Drink

“As we move into the fall and winter, I’m reminded that people will spend a considerable amount of time inside,” Perkins says. “I love to think about bringing the outside in.”

Grab a glass or mug of your favorite seasonal beverage, and prepare to meet your sip-inspired style match.

Fall Sangria

Trend to try: Botanicals and Jewel Tones

When summer hasn’t quite given way to fall and conditions are still warm enough to grill as the sun sets, you very well may be in the mood for a glass of sangria. The flavor of the wine-based punch toes the line between refreshing (fresh fruit) and warming (brandy, red wine). But the color? That’s firm in its stance as vibrant and bold.

“Fall sangria screams accent botanicals with jewel tones,” Short says. “The hues of cranberry and plum from the red wine tell me that you don’t shy away from jewel tones.”

Invest in some richly-colored glassware or add some poppy-colored flowers to perk up your space.

Hot Toddy

Trend to try: Curved Furniture

Essentially honey-sweetened hot tea spiked with bourbon or whiskey, a Hot Toddy “feels like the warm sun on the inside,” Perkins says. That means a lover of this drink should seek out “warm elements with cozy textures.”

Similar to how you wrap your fingers around a mug of this (adult) tea, we suggest adding some curved furniture to your space. Compared to hard, structured lines, the waves hug you in a warm, welcoming way—and feel inviting to all who enter a room.

Pumpkin Spice Latte

Trend to try: Turning Your Home into a Sanctuary

Although some chefs believe that pumpkin spice is on the way out, these warmly-spiced lattes still own the season as of now. If you’re sweet on PSLs, try Pinterest’s biggest fall 2024 home trend: creating your own sanctuary.

Add calming colors to your home, especially in your bedroom, for an extra dose of tranquility. For PSL fans, “the decor should feel like warm kisses,” Perkins says: Just what we want before our heads hit the pillow. Take a cue from Japanese design and shoot for minimal luxury by cleaning out unused items from your closet and tucking away any clutter on your nightstands or near your bed.

Mulled Wine

Trend to try: A Maximalist Porch

Just like a pot of simmering mulled wine is scented with all kinds of spices and citrus, fall is all about layers. A cashmere sweater, a pair of wool socks, or flannel blanket makes you cozy enough to enjoy the outdoors for as much of the season as possible.

With that in mind, fans of this warming red wine cocktail should entertain the idea of layering their porch with cozy and colorful items that enhance the existing space, Perkins recommends.

“Mulled wine is usually plum, so most people immediately think of jeweled colors when they think of this drink. Instead, I think of the orange’s brightness that often adorns the glass’s rim,” Short adds. “I love the contrast of the plum with the punch of orange, a color trend we are seeing in interiors this fall that I am loving.”

Take those colors outside to jazz up your maximalist porch along with details like burnt orange squashes, plum mums, plus bright outdoor pillows and a few vibrant throw blankets stacked on your outdoor seating.

Hot Apple Cider

Trend to try: Seasonal Gorpcore

Since it includes what most would consider the quintessential fall fruits—apples—warm cider lovers will likely adore some natural touches in their space. Enter: Gorpcore, a celebration of all things outdoorsy and all-natural.

“Try using fruit in your centerpieces or add another layer of whimsy through hand-carved serving pieces and chargers,” Short says.

Masala Chai

Trend to try: A Velvet Refresh

Many Indian families have their own signature blend of chai spices, so the exact flavor and aroma of this soul-soothing tea varies. It often includes cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and fennel. Once mixed with milk and sugar, as it’s often served, masala chai is sweet, spicy, and ultra creamy.

Perkins and Short agree it’s wise to lean into that silky consistency and infuse your space with similarly-smooth textures like velvet.

“It’s all about texture,” Short says, when she pictures a glass of chai coming to life in decor. Don’t hold back with adding luxe layers of velvet pillows, curtains, or blankets.
