The start of fall signals a lot of change, which could explain why watching our favorite fall-ish TV shows has become a staple of the season. Whether it’s the nostalgic comfort or simply a way to slow down and recharge, there’s no denying that hitting play on Season 1 Episode 1 with a soft blanket and warm drink is the best part about temperatures dropping.
As it turns out, your favorite fall TV show can offer you more than just comfort this season—it can be a source of some major design inspiration, too.

Gilmore Girls: Traditional and Charming
Is there any TV show more quintessentially fall-themed than Gilmore Girls? While we’re sure Stars Hollow experiences a standard range of seasons, Rory and Lorelai seem to be in a perpetual state of sweater weather, and we’re here for it.
Meagan Stock, an interior designer and professional organizer based in Ontario, Canada, says you can bring some of that quaint Stars Hollow feeling into your home by leaning into all things charming, cozy, and traditionally-fall themed.
“Think strictly orange pumpkins, twinkle lights, hay bales, dried wheat, or other dried florals—burgundy preserved eucalyptus is a personal favorite—throughout your home,” she says.
When it comes to colors, Stock recommends you stick to a warm color palette. Think thick plaid blankets in autumnal colors, warm wood tones, and more.

Friday Night Lights: Neutral, Earthy Colors
You haven’t truly experienced fall until you’ve spent Friday night at a football game in a small town. If Friday Night Lights is your go-to comfort show, Stock says you should opt for organic colors in your decor.
“We are going to totally shake up the usual fall color palette of orange and red, and instead, reach for chocolate brows, white pumpkins, and some beautiful white fall mums,” she says. “These decor choices may be neutral, but I promise they can feel just as cozy.”
That said, you don’t need to shy away from warm tones completely. If you’re craving a bit of color in your decor, add it in small and subtle ways: A fall wreath, dried flower bouquet, or fall candle in a decorative container all give a touch of festive color to a neutral space. And make sure to have football playing in the background, too.

The Vampire Diaries: Dark and Moody
If The Vampire Diaries is on repeat for you this fall, you’re definitely going to want to sink your teeth into a moody decor style. The goal is dark, cozy, and nature inspired (Elena, Stefan, and Damon do spend an awful lot of time in the forest, after all).
For the color palette, use plenty of black, gray, and white or cream. If you’re going to use colors, go for dark hues like burgundy. Bring in some natural elements like dried flowers and branches, and display them in vases. Create ambient lighting with lots of candles throughout your home—the more gothic, the better.
Outside, Stock recommends decorating with black lanterns, red and white fall mums, and white pumpkins with a few orange ones sprinkled in. Come Halloween, don’t be afraid to lean even further into the spooky and supernatural. Think faux gravestones, skeletons, and plenty of vampire references—obviously.

Stranger Things: Spooky and Retro
Forget warm and cozy—if Stranger Things gets you in the fall mood, then retro with a spooky edge is the way to go. The show is set in the late ’80s, so channel that radical decade in your home with pieces like shaggy rugs, pop culture-inspired artwork, heavy fabrics, and classic patterns like checks, stripes, and plaids.
For the color palette, stick to classic ’80s colors like mustard yellow, brown, orange, maroon, and teal in warm and muted hues. And of course, you have to string up some multi-colored Christmas lights. Once Halloween arrives, this is your chance to go all out (and Upside Down), and bring out the spooky side of your decor.
“Prepare yourself to be the go-to Halloween house on the street,” Stock says. “This is the perfect opportunity to cover your yard in fake gravestones, pop orange pumpkins all over your porch, and add melted pillar candles here and there.”
Don’t forget to dress like it’s the ’80s when you hand out candy and/or Eggos.

This Is Us: All-American Autumn
Grab the tissues! If you rewatch This is Us every fall, Stock recommends a traditional all-American approach to your decor.
“Put up your favorite fall wreath, shop for lots of fall mums, and add a jack-o-lantern,” she says. “When decorating the inside of your home, make sure there are lots of cozy blankets around and fall greenery in your vases.”
Choose prints like plaid and gingham and stick to traditional fall colors like red, orange, white, and green in calm, muted tones. Add a candle or two for ambiance, break out the themed doormat, and add a fall planter to your porch to finish off the look.

Charmed: Candlelit Cozy
It’s the season of the witch, so its no surprise that Charmed has become a classic nostalgic fall TV show. Channel the wicked, occult feel by incorporating lots of layers, texture, and candlelit corners in your fall decor.
“Swap out your summer rugs for warmer tones [and] layer your area rug over a larger jute rug for added texture,” Stock says.
Don’t be shy with the throw pillows and blankets in warm, muted colors, and be sure to fill your indoor and outdoor spaces with plenty of candlesticks to set the mood. Pumpkins on the porch are always a good idea too.
