Tom Petty’s Malibu estate sells for $11.2M, ending an era of rock history

One of Malibu’s most storied homes — and a cherished piece of rock history — has officially found a new owner.

The former estate of Tom Petty, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and frontman of the Heartbreakers, has sold for $11.2 million. The Malibu listing was held by Myra Nourmand and Levi Freeman of Nourmand & Associates–Hollywood, with Michael Telega and Or Brodsky of The Brodsky Group at Compass representing the buyer.

“This was a meaningful sale,” said Michael Telega, who helped secure the property for a buyer who shares Petty’s deep love of music.

“Malibu has become a collector’s market. The best homes still command strong prices because they can’t be replicated — especially those with history, acreage, and privacy.”

Located on a double-gated street off Pacific Coast Highway, the 2.6-acre estate sits above Escondido Beach and Paradise Cove, offering an exceptionally private setting shared by only a handful of homes.

Built in 1943, the residence embodies a timeless Malibu spirit — creative, eclectic, and quietly luxurious.

Standout interiors that hint at the home’s legendary past

For nearly three decades, this property served as Petty’s personal refuge and recording space, surrounded by gardens, fountains, and cascading waterfalls. Its atmosphere is more akin to a hidden botanical retreat than a celebrity compound.

Petty, who passed away in 2017, previously owned a custom-built Los Angeles mansion that’s now owned by none other than Selena Gomez.

Designed for music, creativity, and peace

The main residence spans seven bedrooms and ten baths, filled with character-rich details — wood-beamed ceilings, vintage chandeliers, wrought ironwork, and five fireplaces, including one in the formal dining room with seating for sixteen.

Skylights flood the interiors with light, while every bedroom opens directly to lush gardens and trellised patios.

Featuring wrought ironwork, beamed ceilings

Sophistication meets breezy design in the light-filled spaces with crisp white walls that reflect the natural light; wrought iron elements, beamed ceilings provide contrast and make each of the rooms stand out without feeling overpowering.

The primary suite includes a private patio with fountain, a soaking tub and steam shower lined with Moroccan tiles, and an enormous walk-in closet fit for rock royalty.

Nearby, a bonus room with skylights, dry sauna, and fountain serves as a flexible wellness space.

Outdoor living on a grand scale

The property’s grounds, lovingly maintained and often compared to a “mini Huntington Gardens,” feature manicured lawns, koi ponds, fruit trees, and bougainvillea-draped pathways.

With a separate guest house and studio

A guest house and studio, originally converted by Petty into his private music studio, remain on the property. Fully pre-wired and sound-ready, the space once served as his creative escape for songwriting and recording.

A Malibu legend with lasting appeal (plus a night-lit sports court)

Beyond its musical legacy, the estate is a fully realized compound with parking for 15+ cars, a night-lit sports court, solar panels, staff quarters, and backup generator — details that reflect the same care Petty brought to his craft.

For the new owner, the connection to music made this purchase especially poignant, a chance to preserve a place where inspiration struck one of rock’s greatest artists.
