Home of the Week: The spectacular Manoir Voltaire, a $49M tropical paradise in St. Barts

Today, we’re whisking you away to the serene — and ultra-exclusive — island country of St. Barts, where a truly spectacular $49 million tropical retreat is looking for new owners.

Located in the coveted Marigot area on Saint Barthelemy (more commonly known as St. Barts), the exceptional estate is dubbed Le Manoir Voltaire and consists of two contemporary villas — with a distinct Caribbean twist.

Owned by a fashion mogul, the newly completed property is impressive even by St. Barts standards, where only the world’s richest can afford to buy prime real estate, despite high demand.

The property landed on the market with a bang in mid-July, thanks to its hefty $49 million asking price. Rick Moeser of Douglas Elliman is the Global Marketing Consultant for the St. Barts estate, and he is co-listing it with Kevin Barrallon and Tracy Kelly of Saint Barth Real Estate, and Xavier Pignet of Barnes International.

Built into a hillside on the eastern side of the island, the $49 million estate sits on roughly one acre of land in Marigot, an affluent area of the island.

It consists of a six-bedroom main house and a three-bedroom guesthouse, each with its own pool, private entrance, and parking facilities, and outfitted with the most luxurious finishes and amenities you can think of.

The newly completed luxury retreat is owned by Thierry Gillier, founder of the Zadig & Voltaire fashion house, who purchased the land in 2015 for an undisclosed amount. He then commissioned local architect Lorena Gabaldon to bring his vision to life.

Gillier is reportedly looking to part ways with Manoir Voltaire as he’s ready to take on another house project, Mansion Global reports.

Much like the rest of the luxury homes on St. Barts, Le Manoir Voltaire showcases modern architecture with Caribbean influences and features a distinctive cantilevered roof — meant to maximize outdoor space and provide shade.

A single-level residence, the 1,930-square-foot lower villa (that goes by the name Ti) offers three elegant bedrooms, each with its own ensuite bathroom, a gourmet kitchen, an outdoor lounge, and a primary bedroom suite with a private outdoor soaker tub.

The approximately 3,830-square-foot home main house towers above the villa with its two stories and generous square footage. It features six bedrooms, four of which are primary bedrooms, each with ensuite bathrooms.

Here, we also find a TV lounge, a children’s room that sleeps six, and a staff room for two, along with an infinity-edge heated pool that runs the full length of the villa.

The same architect who envisioned the property designed the custom furniture, using a primarily neutral palette that complements the natural surroundings.

A special feature of Le Manoir Voltaire is the fountain basin — a serene space for quiet reflection that “embodies the soul of the house,” per the listing.

But the most impressive water features are undoubtedly the estate’s two large, heated pools, one of which spans the entire length of the main house.

The frame was constructed from Bangkirai wood from Bali, while Iroko wood from West Africa is used for latticework and shutters.

The travertine flooring, sourced from Italy, adds a grounded, earthy feel, while cream marble and IPE wood from Brazil contribute to the timeless elegance of the interiors.

Fitting for a property of this caliber, the house is equipped with 124 solar panels and 72 batteries.

A rare opportunity to own real estate in St. Barts

Real estate in St. Barts is notoriously expensive, largely because of the limited amount of land available for development and the high demand from ultra-wealthy buyers.

The island’s exclusivity makes it all the more desirable, with many homes (most of them considerably smaller than Le Manoir Voltaire) selling for tens of millions of dollars.

In fact, just last year, a roughly 130-acre waterfront property that was once owned by David Rockefeller, sold for a mindboggling $136 million, setting a new record for the island.

St. Barts has long been a playground for the rich and famous, so it’s no surprise that many celebrities have owned homes on the island.

Pippa Middleton, the sister of Kate Middleton (Duchess of Cambridge) and her husband, hedge fund manager James Matthews, reportedly own a property in St. Barts, while A-listers like David and Victoria Beckham and Leonardo DiCaprio are known to enjoy lavish vacations here. So we’re looking forward to seeing who the next famous owner of this spectacular estate might be!
